They left the village early in the morning, wanting to be on their way as quickly as they could. The road to Grankallan was long, and they had already been delayed far more than they had planned. Mila saw how painfully bruised Flank still was, whereas the bruise on her face had gone down. She had refused Shai’s treatment for it, knowing it was not necessary considering her spores.

Lash eagerly dashed out of the village, still wearing the clothes Mila had got for her. Mila hurried after, making sure that Lash followed the correct road as they made their way north.

Bal’Bra seemed the most refreshed out of everyone, stretching liberally as she strolled along beside the horses, her long legs and fast pace easily keeping up.

“Few things are better than a morning after a smash up,” she declared.

Mila was not so sure. The face of the chief lingered in her thoughts, lurking with the other bandit she had killed, as well as Flank’s dead family. Every now and then she could have sworn she saw them, staring at her from out of the trees, hidden behind a bush. She tried to shake that weakness away. Uncle Mycal would not be haunted like this, she was sure. He would press on, fight, succeed. He would not have got caught the way she had.

Sporing idiot she cursed at herself.

“You, you went through a lot Bal’Bra,” Mila said. She had not properly asked her about her time in the cavern. “They really beat you.”

“I’m no crushing Mila,” Bal’Bra said. “And I crushed one of them.”

Mila remembered watching her snap the neck of one of the Brahli. “They were bad Brahli then?”

“Bad? No, they held their honour,” Bal’Bra looked shocked.

“What? But they were bandits,” Mila gasped.

“They were honour sealed to their leader like I am sealed to you. If they had disobeyed they would have broken their honour like weaklings. Only if he commanded them to break honour binding would they be able to escape the seal.”

“Honour binding?” Mila asked.

“Flames, you don’t know this? We Brahli have honour we must observe. Honour obligation is general rules to follow, mainly obeying the laws of the land we are in.”

“But, they weren’t doing that. I mean, they were bandits,” Mila objected.

“But they were honour sealed, which is stronger than honour obligation. If the one you are sealed to commands you to break honour obligation, no honour is lost.”

“I… think I get it. So I could order you to break laws and you would do it?” Mila asked.

“Honour would command I do it,” Bal’Bra nodded. “But, honour binding is higher than honour sealing. Honour binding are the strongest codes of a Brahli, and nothing can break them. If a Brahli’s seal holder orders them to break honour binding, then honour commands the Brahli to crush their seal holder unless they give up the order.”

“Spores, I should know them then,” Mila said.

“I would have warned you if you tried Mila,” Bal’Bra said. “I doubt you will.”

“But what are they though, I want to know?” Mila said.
